Charging at home is the cheapest and most convenient way to run an electric vehicle, but a standard power point was never designed for it. A dedicated EV charger on its own circuit charges a typical EV overnight, protects your wiring, and lets you take advantage of cheap off-peak power.

What Does EV Charger Installation Involve?

Steve starts with a short site visit or photos of your switchboard, meter board and the spot you want the charger. He checks your supply size (most East Auckland homes are 63A single-phase), how much capacity your switchboard has spare, and the cable route from the board to the charger location. From that he gives you a fixed quote. On the day, he runs a new dedicated circuit, fits an RCD-protected breaker (and a surge protector if the board does not already have one), mounts and wires the charger, commissions it with the app, tests everything and issues the Certificate of Compliance. A straightforward garage installation is usually done in half a day.

Single-Phase or Three-Phase: Which Charger Do You Need?

Almost every EV sold in New Zealand charges perfectly well on a 7kW single-phase charger, which adds roughly 40km of range per hour and fully charges most cars overnight. Three-phase 11kW or 22kW chargers are worth it if you have three-phase supply already, drive very high kilometres, or are installing for a business fleet. If your home is single-phase, upgrading to three-phase is possible but involves the lines company and is rarely necessary for one or two cars. Steve will tell you honestly which option makes sense.

Load Management and Your Switchboard

A 7kW charger draws 32A, which is a big share of a standard 63A domestic supply. Without load management, running the charger, an induction cooktop, a heat pump and a hot water cylinder at once can trip the main. Modern smart chargers solve this by measuring the whole-house load with a CT clamp and throttling the charge rate automatically. Steve sets this up on every installation where it is needed. If your switchboard is an older fuse board or has no spare ways, he upgrades it in the same visit so the whole job is done once.

How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost in Auckland?

Installation cost depends mainly on the cable run and whether the switchboard needs work. As a guide, a typical installation where the charger is in an attached garage near the switchboard is at the lower end, while a detached garage, a long underground run, or a switchboard upgrade adds to the price. The charger unit itself is separate and ranges widely by brand and features. Steve provides a fixed, itemised quote before any work starts, and there is no charge for the initial assessment. Note that some electricity retailers offer EV-specific plans with very cheap overnight rates, which is where a smart charger with scheduling really pays off.

Installing a charger in a terrace or apartment with shared parking is very doable but needs a little planning: the cable route from your switchboard to your carpark, whether the charger needs its own metering, and body corporate approval. For commercial premises he installs single or multiple chargers with shared load balancing and optional user access control for staff and visitors.

Which EV charger should I buy?

For most households a 7kW single-phase smart charger with load management and app scheduling is the right choice. Tesla Wall Connector is excellent for Tesla owners, while Wallbox Pulsar, myenergi Zappi and Ocular units suit any car with a Type 2 connection. Steve will recommend a charger based on your car, your supply and whether you want solar integration.

Can I just use a normal power point to charge my EV?

You can trickle-charge from a standard 10A socket, but it is slow (around 10km of range per hour) and puts sustained load on a circuit that was not designed for it. A dedicated charger on its own circuit is safer, several times faster and lets you use cheap overnight power automatically.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade to install an EV charger?

Not always. If your switchboard is modern with RCD protection and a spare way, the charger can usually be added directly. Older fuse boards or full boards generally need upgrading, which Steve does in the same visit.

How long does installation take?

A typical garage installation takes two to four hours. Longer cable runs, detached garages or a switchboard upgrade can extend this to a full day.

Can you install a charger in a detached garage or on an external wall?

Yes. Steve runs armoured or conduit-protected cable to detached garages and carports and installs weatherproof chargers on external walls. Underground runs are trenched and ducted to AS/NZS 3000 requirements.

Will the charger work with solar panels?

Yes. Chargers such as the myenergi Zappi and Wallbox can be set to charge only from surplus solar, or to top up from the grid overnight. Steve installs the CT clamps and configures the charger to suit your system.

Do you provide a Certificate of Compliance?

Yes. Every EV charger installation is tested and issued with an Electrical Certificate of Compliance, which you should keep for insurance and resale.
