Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring
Common warning signs include fuses that blow or breakers that trip regularly, lights that flicker or dim when appliances start, warm or discoloured switches and power points, a burning or fishy smell near outlets, black rubber or cloth-covered cables visible in the ceiling or under the floor, two-pin sockets or lighting circuits with no earth, and a switchboard with rewirable fuses rather than circuit breakers and RCDs. Any one of these is worth an inspection. Several together usually mean a rewire is due.
What a Full Rewire Includes
Steve removes or isolates all the old cabling and runs new TPS cable to every light, switch, power point and fixed appliance. He installs a new switchboard with RCD protection on every circuit, surge protection and spare capacity, adds dedicated circuits for the oven, cooktop, hot water, heat pump, dryer and any EV charger, brings earthing and bonding up to AS/NZS 3000, and installs new switches and outlets throughout. Smoke alarms are hard-wired and interconnected where required. Everything is tested and an Electrical Certificate of Compliance is issued.
Rewiring Without Wrecking Your Home
Rewiring inevitably means getting cable into walls, but it does not have to mean ripping them open. Steve feeds cable through ceiling spaces, subfloors and existing wall cavities wherever possible, uses the old cable to pull the new where it can be done safely, and keeps any access holes small and in inconspicuous places so they patch cleanly. In villas and bungalows with original plaster ceilings and timber panelling he plans the routes specifically to protect those features. Partial Rewires and Staged Work
Not every home needs everything replaced at once. Often the lighting circuits are original while the power circuits were replaced in the 1980s, or one wing of the house was extended with modern cable. Steve inspects first and tells you honestly what needs replacing now, what can wait, and what is fine. Rewires can also be staged room by room or floor by floor so you can stay in the house throughout.
