About This Service

Your switchboard is the heart of your home's electrical system, and if yours still has ceramic or rewirable fuses, no RCD safety switches, or no spare capacity, it is overdue for an upgrade. Old boards were designed for a stove, a hot water cylinder and a few lights, not for heat pumps, induction cooktops, spa pools and EV chargers.

Say goodbye to searching for the right fuse wire in the dark. A modern switchboard uses circuit breakers you simply reset, and RCD safety switches that cut the power in milliseconds if someone gets a shock or a fault develops, protecting both people and property.

Steve replaces switchboards across East Auckland and the Eastern Bays in about half a day, with power off for only a few hours, and issues an Electrical Certificate of Compliance on completion.

Do I Need a Switchboard Upgrade?

You almost certainly do if your board has ceramic fuses or fuse wire, if there are no RCD safety switches (look for buttons marked T or Test), if breakers trip regularly, if the board is full and you want to add a heat pump, EV charger or spa, or if you can see scorching, melted plastic or hear buzzing. Boards from the 1990s with circuit breakers but only one or two RCDs are also worth upgrading, because current standards call for RCD protection on every final sub-circuit. Steve offers a free switchboard check and will tell you straight whether yours needs replacing.

What Is Included in a Switchboard Upgrade

Steve removes the old board and fits a new enclosure with a main switch, RCD-protected circuit breakers for every circuit, a surge protection device, and clear labelling. He checks the condition of the mains cable and main earth and replaces them if they are undersized or deteriorated. Existing circuits are reconnected and tested, and any dangerous wiring found at the board is reported to you with a recommendation. The work is completed with an Electrical Certificate of Compliance. Where the meter board is separate and also old, Steve can coordinate with your electricity retailer for a meter change.

How Much Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost in Auckland?

The main factors are the number of circuits, whether the mains and earth need replacing, whether the meter board needs work, and how much rewiring is found at the board. A straightforward residential upgrade is a modest investment for the safety it buys; adding mains replacement or extra circuits increases the price. Steve provides a fixed quote after a quick look at your board, usually from photos, and there are no surprises on the day.

Switchboard Upgrades for Heat Pumps, EV Chargers and Spas

Adding a large load to an old board is where many problems start. As part of the upgrade Steve installs dedicated circuits sized correctly for your heat pump, EV charger, spa pool, induction cooktop or hot water cylinder, and confirms your incoming supply can handle them all together. If the supply itself is the limit, he can arrange an upgrade from 40A or 63A single-phase to a larger supply or three-phase with the lines company.

Commercial Switchboards

Steve also upgrades and replaces distribution boards for shops, offices, workshops and light-industrial units across East Tamaki, Botany, Panmure and Ellerslie, including three-phase boards, sub-mains and the compliance documentation commercial tenancies require. Work is scheduled to minimise downtime.

Switchboard Upgrades FAQs

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most residential switchboard upgrades are completed in half a day. Power is off for two to four hours while the new board is installed and tested.

What is an RCD and why does every circuit need one?

An RCD (residual current device, or safety switch) detects current leaking to earth, such as through a person, and cuts the power within milliseconds. Current New Zealand standards require RCD protection on all final sub-circuits in new work, and having one on every circuit is the single biggest safety improvement you can make.

Will I be without power for long?

Only for the few hours it takes to swap the board. Steve tells you the timing in advance so you can plan around it.

Can you upgrade my switchboard and install an EV charger on the same day?

Yes. It is the most efficient way to do it. The new board is designed with the EV charger circuit included and both are completed and certified in one visit.

Do I need a new switchboard to get a heat pump installed?

Not always, but many older boards have no spare way or capacity. Steve checks first and, if an upgrade is needed, includes the heat pump circuit in the new board.

Is a switchboard upgrade required by law?

There is no blanket requirement to replace an old board, but any new circuit added must be RCD protected, and insurers are increasingly asking about fuse boards. Rental properties also have safety obligations. An upgrade is strongly recommended for any home with rewirable fuses.

Do you provide a Certificate of Compliance?

Yes. Every switchboard upgrade is tested and issued with an Electrical Certificate of Compliance, which you should keep for insurance and resale.
